LED Sign Tech & Spec: Front Access Design Considerations for Digital Signage and Hinged Faces

Last year I wrote about the different access options for LED signs, and my opinions based on direct experience with each method. Today, I would like to focus on the "Front Access Face" (Hinged Face) method specifically. There are many ways to do this wrong, and only a  few ways to do it right. Poorly designed systems will cause long term safety, service, and warranty issues for the lifetime of the sign.

At first thought this seems like a great idea. Why not make the entire face open up for service? You can open the sign faster, access the component layout on a large scale, and replace parts more quickly. All of these things can be true but there are definite trade offs to be aware of. Some of these are small, but there are many potentially large factors that must be taken into consideration.


Size
Full size hinged faces will ultimately have a size limitation. Doors that are too large will “bow” leaving the door seals away from the cabinet, allowing water entry and in some cases a skewed image. The exact size limit depends on the design, and what the manufacturer has found works best. The problem is that many manufacturers haven’t found the sweet spot, or do not care to. They are more focused on the short term sale, then the long term support of the sign. Be very careful of over-sized hinged face systems.

Water Entry
This is one of the most common failure points and a huge factor when designing and implementing a hinged face system. There are few designs in the market that address this issue fully, and most systems will have problems in the long run, if not immediately after installation. Manufacturers have found this out the hard way. The good ones have implemented solutions or moved away from hinged faces altogether. The bad ones continue to use cheaper outdated designs to hit a low price point. This has been a major issue with many of the hinge faced units designed and/or produced overseas.

Door Lifts
Something has to hold these massive doors up and it’s usually gas lifts, typically called “Gas Springs” (similar to the cylinders that hold up an SUV’s rear hatch). When the doors are too big, you have to supply a lot of "push" to safely lift them up. This means constant pressure on the door frames, pushing the faces downwards or outwards depending on the design. In some cases, the lifts have been so powerful that they can push a service tech off the ladder or bucket truck.

Hinge Strength and Design
This is another critical item in the design, and another failure point for a high number of systems. All the weight for the doors rests on these hinges, and as I mentioned earlier the gas lifts are putting a lot of pressure on the doors. When a hinge breaks, simple gravity and the power of the lifts combine to present a significant safety hazard for service crews. I've talked to service personnel in the industry who have experienced this first hand. The consequences can range from being stranded in the bucket for a couple of hours, to serious long term injuries. The quality of the hinge and the design cannot be sacrificed to save costs. Unfortunately this does happen, all too often. It’s not worth the risk in my opinion.

Bucket Access
Maneuvering a bucket underneath a large sign face is difficult, and sometimes impossible. If you have to reach components in the top portion of the sign the bucket has to be almost directly under the sign, or placed to the side to get the lift arm away from the open face. If you're working on multiple parts of the sign, this constant re-positioning can add quite a bit of time to the service call.

Internal Cables
Longer power and data cables are required to connect the internal components on the back of the sign, to the LED modules on the hinged face. Instead of running directly from the component, straight across to the LED module, they have to be run up to the top of the door, then back down on the inside. When this isn't accounted for, the wires can suffer voltage drop, and the data signal can be weak and susceptible to interference.

LED Module Replacement
While accessing the internal components might be a bit easier, replacing the LED modules can be more difficult depending on the design. In many cases you have to remove screws (or hopefully latches) from underneath the face, then awkwardly push the module out, then back through the hole. If the manufacturer has used screws to hold the modules in place, this becomes a fight against gravity and gathering dropped screws from below the sign.

In my opinion, the hinged face design has limited applications, and should be used for smaller signs and custom applications.  Although easy access to sign components is important, there is a balance to be drawn between functionality, and serviceability. When a sign is designed to function well on a consistent basis, it requires less service. I would rather have a sign that is simple to access that doesn't break down as often, than a super accessible sign that has the potential to break down more often.

I still believe that the front access design with a solid cabinet, and latched LED Modules is the ideal method for most applications. It draws the best balance between functionality, simplicity and serviceability that will support the greatest variety of applications.

Digital Signage Need To Know: How an LED Sign Manufacturer's Approach to Design and Engineering Can Affect Installations

It takes a team of people to design, engineer and produce almost any product. By utilizing  the strengths of many, companies have been able to create some pretty cool products. LED Signs are no different. To make a quality sign, you need good engineers, good designers, and good production personnel. The end result is a reflection of the people who make the product, how well they communicated, and their preferences for how a product should work. In the end, the dealers and end-users see the results first hand, good or bad.

This is the first, in a series of articles about how different approaches can affect specific aspects of an LED Sign. This post will focus on sign installation and how the manufacturers engineering, design, and production can mean the difference between a 3 day ordeal, or a quick 1/2 day installation.

A small oversight in the initial design of a product can mean huge headaches for an installer, or end-user. Poor documentation can waste time and money on the job site. Over engineering can increase installation and service costs. Inadequate quality controls mean down time on broken signs, and immediate installation issues.

Design
Simplicity is king. The best designs are simple, effective, and take the long term operation of a sign into account. Signs have to be serviceable but still maintain an efficient production build and sealed cabinet design. Component locations should be documented and easy to access. Structural features like mounting angle, or brackets should be standardized to allow installers to be well prepared before the sign ships. Data and electrical entry points should be easy to reach, and clearly marked. Anything that can be pre-connected to the sign should be, allowing the installer to focus on what they do best, fabricating structures and physically installing the sign.

If Simplicity is King, then Balance is Queen. Drawing a good balance between design factors is difficult. Some do it well, and others do not. If you fall too far on one side, you could have a sign that is extremely easy to service, but is always broken because the cabinet design is flawed. Or a sign that easy easy to install in one location, but difficult in another due to random changes in structural design.

Documentation
This is a key component of a successful installation. Not only in terms of the actual install, but the planning stages as well. There are obvious problems with the many overseas manufacturers having little to no documentation, usually translated poorly. But I would like to focus on the less obvious issues when you are supplied documentation.

Relevance is key when talking about documentation for sign installation. Installers need to focus on their job, installing the sign. Over zealous technical writers can work against this goal with large in-depth manuals that are impressive at first glance, but are seldom used at an installation site. Installers need to get relevant information as quickly as possible, without having to sift through pages of technical information and legal statements to get there. A good on-site installation manual should be visual, quick to navigate, and easy to read.

In addition to traditional manuals, the sign itself should be labeled and clearly marked to guide an installer through the process. Communications, electrical and accessories should be pre-connected when possible, and any access points clearly labeled.

Engineering Approach
It’s important to be aware of a manufacturer's engineering approach.  Under-engineered products will have problems, but over-engineering has its own issues. Balance and simplicity are major factors, just like in the design. Overly complicated signs can decrease installation options increasing time and cost for your installation.

A good engineering method allows for scalability and innovation, while minimizing points of failure in the system. Sometimes its easy for engineers to get carried away with a certain aspect of their design, and end up causing problems in other areas because they weren’t looking the big picture.

Production and Quality Control
Standardized production is important to make sure each sign arrives on-site with everything that the installer expected from the shop drawings and other pre-production material. Component locations are where they should be, documentation is there,  and accessory devices are setup correctly and ready to plug and play.

Good quality control is assumed to be in place with every manufacturer, unfortunately this is not the case. There are many who see it as an afterthought and do not put as much emphasis on it as they should. Poor quality control will turn your installer, into a troubleshooter as they diagnose and try to fix a brand new sign. Although good signs can have issues after installation, these will be simple fixes, usually caused by shipping or the installation itself.


If there were such thing as a perfect LED sign, it would be powered by oxygen, use anti-gravity (no installation required!), have an infinite resolution, and cost...nothing. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen, but good manufacturers will strive to make there LED signs as easy as possible to install and support. They will have a balanced approach to design and engineering while keeping their eyes on the big picture, and always remember that the sign must work in the real world, not just on paper.

Defending your brand: Cheap Components/LED Sign Systems cost you more than money.

Over the years I’ve worked with, bought from, worked-on, serviced, taken-down, sold and installed systems from LED Sign manufacturers all over the world. I’ve been asked to come in on installations to consult and I’ve seen the best of signs and the worst of signs. LED Signs, more than other forms of signage, are particularly unnerving for both the experienced Digital Signage shop and sign shops just getting into the market. The signs are big ticket items and when something goes south, the sign shop who sold the deal is going to hear about it from the customer, their competition and people in the area. They definitely draw attention and the worst kind of attention is from a system which isn’t working properly.

LED Signs are all the same right? not really. If you’ve been following the blog or take a look at past articles like this one you’ll see huge differences. Manufacturers often buyout engineering and software development instead of keeping it in-house. Components are sometimes scaled down and cheaper parts swapped in for “economy lines.” There are a lot of lemons in the apple tree making apples-to-apples comparisons difficult. Even worse, many manufacturers try to create specs around perceived “unique” qualities of their systems which don’t have any relevance to actual system performance. They're parlor tricks meant to divert the buyers attention.

The worst reality of LED signage is a lot of the poorly constructed systems actually look great. Put it up, give it power and it runs like any other; for a month or a year, maybe even two years. Unfortunately, the end-user doesn’t pay out for a 1 year system. The investment is not a small one. Most small businesses will commit a substantial portion of their revenue towards buying an LED sign. It’s a big investment. When that investment fails (starts to look dim, has had five service calls in one month to fix a controller issue, has LED modules which failed and the replacement modules don’t match the color, etc.) it fails spectacularly. 


When I’m going out to eat, I’ll take a look at the sign and if the sign doesn’t look good, I’ll pass the restaurant up. It’s a bit superficial of me but really... Do you want to eat at a place where the owners don’t care enough about their business image to keep the sign looking good... What do you think they’re doing in the kitchen where you can’t see what’s being skimped on? What's the cost of a failing/failed Digital Signage? Beyond the multiple trips out to fix the system and the growing burden on the end-user to pay for the service calls (as most systems aren’t warranted on labor), the reputation takes a big hit.

The reputation you get is the one you’ve earned. The sign industry itself is surprisingly smaller than you’d think. Often I’ve spoken with a sign shop owner in CA who is friends with other sign shop owners in FL and NH. At the national tradeshows, people can point out the shops who cut corners and the ones who refuse to do anything but the best builds (even if the price is high). The reputation you earn is important and unfortunately can be lost in a heartbeat. A lot of pain, suffering, money and bad feelings can be saved by doing a little research now to ensure you’re not buying low-end systems touted as quality. 


I’m not saying the most expensive systems out there are the best, just make sure your investment is made with a company who cares about your reputation and is working hard to ensure both your reputation and theirs continue to grow positively. Saving a few dollars by going with the cheapest thing out there will cost you in more ways than one when the system brings the reality check in for payment. Dig deeper and make sure you're getting what you pay for, a balance of cost-conscious build and solid design/engineering. Don't let a bad sign cost you and your end users hard earned money and reputations. The money can be made back, but a reputation takes a lot longer to recover.

Finding a Quality Sign Installer for an EMC or LED Sign Project

Finding a good company to install your very expensive LED sign can be challenging. You want to get a good price and high quality work but there are some obstacles to overcome. Some areas have many companies to choose from, others have very few. How do you find the best installer for your money?

I would like to share some tips I’ve learned over the years, and hopefully save some time and money for those who are entering the world of LED Signs, Video Boards and Electronic Message Centers. 

Research is Key
The internet has provided many sources and ways to research any topic, sign installation included. I’ve listed a few good sources below:

  • SignSearch: This site allows you to search for anything sign related, installation included. I usually select “Have a sign installed” and simply put “Pole Sign” or “Wall Sign” in the description field. Companies are then listed, and you can check out their services, contact info and website.
  • Google Maps: This is pretty straight forward. Just search your organization's address. Once it pops up on the map, click the “Search Nearby” link, and type “Sign Installation” or something similar. This will show a nice geographic location of businesses in your area that have something to do with signs and/or installation. 
  • SignWeb: This has some good directories, similar to SignSearch.

Referrals are also a great way to find good installers. Ask your neighbors who they used for their sign installation, and if they had a good experience. Also, your LED sign supplier might have some good contacts for you.

Qualities to Look For
  • Equipment “In-House”: I have used several companies in the past that outsourced their entire crew and have done an outstanding job. But for the most part, having cranes, bucket trucks, and installation crews all in-house is preferable.  In-house equipment means that scheduling and implementing your installation happens much more quickly than someone who is relying on a third party.
  • Sign Company or “Install Only” Company: I have had success with both types of businesses, but I tend to lean toward finding a company who just does installations. If you need fabrication done (pole covers, painting, ect..) in addition to the installation, a sign company that also specializes in installations might be the way to go.
  • Experience With LED signs: More and more business are using LED signs, so many installers have at least a little bit of experience with LED signs.
  • Licensing and Insurance: Every installer should be licensed and insured in the state/county/city they do work in. Using unlicensed or non-insured installers can cause many long term installation and legal  issues. Most installers will give you their license number to verify.
  • Fast Communication: How quickly a company responds to a quote request, is often a signal of how quickly they will execute your installation. Avoid installers who never seem to be available via telephone, or email. This can signify a lack of organization that will ultimately affect your installation schedule.
Getting Quotes
Narrow your search, but try to get quotes from 3-5 different companies.. This will help you get a better feel for a reasonable cost for your installation and give you more chances to see how quickly each company will respond during the quote process.

Make sure to be very clear on the “Scope of Work” for your installation, so there are no unexpected charges. Here are some general items that should be covered:

  • Pre-Installation Site Survey: The installer should see the site prior to installation to verify power, access, existing structures, and other important items
  • Permits: Are they required? (See my series on permits) If so, who will be pulling them, and how much will it cost. City/County fees vary, but the labor fees for installers to pull permits is usually an hourly rate. In my experience it usually doesn’t go over $300, unless you have to get a special sign variance.
  • Installation of the LED Sign: Where will it be going, how high, how many faces, etc...
  • Electrical Connection: Most installers will make the final connection to existing power within 5 ft of the sign, as long at there is no digging involved. Make sure this is clear.
  • Terms: Layout your expected terms in the quote request. Common terms are 50% down payment, and 50% after the installation is completed.

Once you get the quotes back, take note of the following items:

  • Is the price reasonable? Getting more than one quote will help you determine this. If you get (4) quotes back for $2000 and (1) quote back for $600 chances are the low price is either because the installer isn’t quoting the entire scope, or they are under quoting to secure the job, and will increase the cost during or after the installation. The key is to get as many reasonable quotes as possible, to help you get a feel for the “Market Price”.
  • How quickly did they get it back to you? Most of the time a 1-2 day turnaround is good. If the quote comes back to quickly, verify that the installer is actually quoting all the work and not just throwing a cheap price out there. If it takes too long, you may want to avoid that particular installer. They might be overly busy, or under organized.
  • Does the quote include the entire scope in your original quote request? Double check your quote and make sure you are comparing apples to apples between the quotes.

When securing the final installer, make sure the agreement and scope are very clear. I commonly use the phrase “if it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist” when talking about any kind of service or agreement between two parties. Make sure you have a clear and complete quote and/or agreement for any installation. Email is useful here, and can serve as a good place to verify and keep pertinent information available.
