Digital Signage Need to Know: Product Consistency and Long Term Success with LED Sign Manufacturers.

The ISA International Sign Expo 2014 finished up this weekend, and by all accounts was a great success. I enjoyed talking face to face to partners, manufacturers and providers in the industry and meeting some great people. The experience brought up a couple of topics I would like to discuss today. Product Consistency and the Long Term Relationship with your manufacturer/supplier.  

Although the Orlando show is slightly scaled down when compared to Las Vegas, it can still be a bit overwhelming for those new to the industry. One of the reasons for this is the ‘wow’ factor. Manufacturers want to put their best foot forward, and the good ones can back it up with a solid consistent product and experience long term. However, we should be careful of those who have a great looking product on the show floor, but supply a less than ideal product in reality.

Sometimes it’s easy to spot; choppy graphics and slow animations look sub-par even on a large 20 ft. LED sign. But it can be difficult to tell in many cases, unless you've been in the industry for a while. Super tight pixel pitches and flashy marketing material can sometimes make a supplier look better than they really are. It’s worth the effort to dig deeper, and really make sure you are able to get the same product quality long term.

While a super tight 6-8mm pixel pitch may get your attention at the show, the vast majority of LED signs are going to be in the 16, 20, or 25mm range.  How does the manufacturer measure up with these more affordable pitches? Are they going to use the same materials and quality in the product you order?

To be perfectly clear, there absolutely nothing wrong with a high resolution LED sign, they look spectacular and a good manufacturer will offer these pitches along with their standard line. Putting the highest resolution out there just happens to be a significant trend at these shows, and can sometimes skew a person's objectivity. They key is providing you a consistent product regardless of the resolution, and supporting that product throughout it’s lifetime. Remember, your signs need to last longer than a 3 day indoor trade show; it’s going to be outdoor, in the elements 24/7.

Unfortunately this is an issue for some manufacturers, often many located overseas. You may initially get a similar product to the one you saw at the show, maybe even the first 2-3 months or longer. However, at some point you may start to see changes to the product that you were unaware of, changes to the components and the quality of the material that affect the stability of your product in the field. When these changes occur, who do call?

You may get general answers or apologies, but do you really have any pull with the production team or product managers in a factory across the pacific ocean? Not very much, and unfortunately you may have to pay the price for their mistakes with your own reputation and money. Fixing these issues can be costly, and not often timely as you wait for parts to ship from limited supply of spare parts overseas.

Consistency is extremely important in our industry. You want a partner who has the ability to provide this too you on a regular basis. And when changes are made, to inform and document those changes for you. One of the important factors that impacts the ability to provide this is location. As I mentioned in an earlier post,  domestic design and engineering are fundamental to producing quality LED signs. Additionally, domestic support is key to providing you the tools you need to maintain happy customers and functional signs.

Being able to contact a US based representative, who reports to leadership in the US, who oversees production and design team face to face, in the US, is a benefit not to be taken lightly. Feedback and communication from the sign providers onsite provides priceless information for manufacturers to better their product and services. It’s difficult to get that level of communication from a factory thousands of miles away.

As I mentioned before, you, the sign provider bear the ultimate burden for your LED signs in the field and their long term operation. Your signs must stand up to the elements 24/7, and must be fixed in a timely manner when issues arise. The sign warranty plays a central role in this, and should be clear, underwritten, and backed up by real action, not just ink on paper. The industry standard is 5 years parts and “factory labor”. This usually includes parts replacement, and the labor for the factory to repair parts at the factory. It should not be confused with a real onsite, or service labor warranty that includes actual onsite service to the sign. A few manufacturers offer the extra onsite labor warranty, and I highly recommend it.

Everyone wins when you choose a quality manufacturer. You get a partner invested in your success. Your customers get a consistent product that will last, and when issues arise you both have a US based factory and support team ready to assist. Remember to keep your objectivity, don’t get distracted by the ‘wow’ factor, and take the time to do your research and dig a bit deeper. Make sure you're doing business with a company who cares as much about your long term success as you do.

It's been a little over a year now since we first started the blog. LED Signage 101 Continued: The good, the bad and how to tell the difference

Having hopped around the globe a few times and seen what’s out there for Digital Signage (specifically LED Displays), I’ve seen a lot of the good, the bad and the indifferent. As a kid, I loved Times Square in NYC. It was big, bright and amazing. The tech adult in me kind of kills the joy. I look at displays which have bad pixels, panels which are discolored, slow refresh rates which cause a slight “jitter” in image transitions and overall a mix of amazing systems and poorly produced displays which I’m surprised someone’s not asking for their money back.

Spotting problems with LED Sign systems is not usually a task for the layperson. I’ve brought my friends out to see some big displays (yes, they put up with my weirdness) and ask them what they see. They see an impressive sign. I ask them to then hold their hands up like they’re preparing to take a picture and look at sections of the display in isolation from the rest and suddenly they can’t unsee what I’ve shown them. I admit, I’m one of those people who looks for the wire when the magician is pulling a trick out of “thin air” however the world needs sceptics. Some companies try to pull tricks when it’s not a magic show you’re looking for.

How can you tell when you’re getting buried in “geek speak” vs. being given the straight truth? Here are a few bits you can run with to separate the good from the bad:

1. Take the salesperson out of the equation and ask to speak with a tech or engineer for the company. If they don’t have one, you should start raising the red flag. Techs and engineers are problem solvers by nature and you can’t solve a problem by holding back information. They’ll often tell you a lot more than you ever wanted to know, but you’ll get a straight story more often than not. Don’t let the salesperson reword anything or jump-in on the conversation.

2. Look at the documentation. Does the manufacturer lay everything out in an easy-to-understand format? Is there any “funny English” in the documentation or software help file? Do they have replacement guides covering every component in their system; when someone’s 80 feet in the air, they don’t often want to be on the phone and would prefer a simple sheet showing what has to be done, step-by-step.

3. Don’t let someone bury you in “geek speak” and numbers. When it comes down to it, an LED sign system is fairly uncomplicated. There are important technical details, but the system itself should be easy to explain. Why do they put conformal coating on a power supply or why do they NOT put conformal coating on? Why do they build the system the way they do? How long have they developed software for the system and how many changes have occurred over the years? If they don’t make their own software or engineer their build (from scratch), raise the red flag high.

After a brief conversation using these tactics with the manufacturer, you should get a clearer picture of what you’re really getting from them when you chose them as a partner. At the end of the day, it’s not their system which will go up in front of a business, it’s your business’ reputation and name people will associate with the system. Make sure it’s a solid solution which will benefit both the end-user and yourself. Dig deeper.

Quality in the components: How a single capacitor or process can make a HUGE difference.

It’s the little things in life which can make a huge difference. Reaching into your pocket and finding a dime which makes for exact change at the coffee shop or being glad you paid that little extra to buy the nicer watch which has lasted for years when others have long been retired to the back of the catch-all drawer. Over time, electronic components have become more versatile, more reliable and cheaper. The difference between a high-end and a low-end capacitor can be a few pennies. It doesn't seem like much, but those pennies make a big difference to a manufacturer who buys hundreds of thousands of them.

if you’ve ever had to run a home DIY project, you’ve gone to the hardware store and picked out the bits and pieces you needed. Maybe you noticed a few different types of nails and you buy a bunch of the cheaper ones to save a few dollars on a project that is already going over budget. If you’ve been there, you’ve probably also noticed how those cheaper nails bent, wouldn’t go in easily, and (in many cases) just didn’t get the job done. You go back and spend a few dollars more and find the slightly more expensive nails really made a difference. The same thing occurs in manufacturing.

A manufacturer will look at the overall performance and the failure rate of a component. Component X costs 5 cents less than Component Y, but it’s prone to a 5% higher failure rate. The manufacturer looks at how many they’re buying, how important to the performance of the system that component is, and will decide whether it’s worth the cost savings to put the cheaper component in and put up with a few RMA replacements vs. the greater expense of the more reliable (and costly) unit.

How much attention to detail is paid by the manufacturer of choice? You have to ask them. How do they source their parts? How much of a failure tolerance does the manufacturer have? When they look at processes which could extend the lifetime optimal performance of the system (for example, conformal coating on power supplies), do they see the value added for the end-user or do they see an expense they don’t want to be burdened with?

When a manufacturer is pinching pennies, it doesn’t always mean those savings are passed along to you. They likely sell the same system at the same price (and often a higher cost) than the competition and you’re stuck playing a game of chance to see if the components will function for the projected lifetime of the system or if “Warranty Deadline” day comes and goes and things start falling apart well before their time.

Make sure you’re being told, up front, what really goes into the system you’re investing in. Make sure neither you, nor the manufacturer are saving a few pennies now which will cost a lot of dollars to fix later. Usually the axiom “penny saved is a penny earned,” is a good one. In this case, the manufacturer reaps rewards and the buyer ends up with the risk. You’re investing in them by choosing the manufacturer as a partner, make sure they’re making the right decisions to ensure your investment and trust are well placed.

LED Signs 101: LED sign system components

Driver board, LED Tile, Modules, Panels, Quads, etc. If one were to look at all the different titles, they’d be misled into thinking they were different things when they’re all component titles for the same thing; an LED “panel” made up of a matrix of either 8x16, 16x16, or even 32x32 pixels (LED groups) with connectors for power and communications meant for LED Signage. LED components can be confusing and even though the industry has been in existence for decades, the terms are not standardized across the board.

Many manufacturer’s don’t want you to understand the systems. The more complex it seems, the less likely they figure you are to dig deeper and get to understand what they’re really using to produce the product. Here’s a quick tutorial (which will be expanded and expounded upon later):

Power Supplies: Be wary of private-labeled systems. A sign shop doesn’t make it’s own ballasts and power supplies for signs. They reach out to the top manufacturer and get the best product at the best price. It’s possible to specify some particular component tweaks, but the reason they do this is reliability. A main manufacturer who specializes in power supplies builds millions of units (not thousands) and they work to ensure the clients get the best quality. It’s nice to have a private-label, but who stands behind that brand should something happen to the manufacturer of the LED Display?

PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) and LED Panels: A lot of companies are claiming to be “made in the USA” when in fact they buy off-the-shelf product from somewhere in Asia and put it in a cabinet. This is akin to me claiming a paint-by-numbers set I’ve done is my own masterpiece. If the company is not engineering their own solution, they’re handing control over to someone else and they have little/no control over quality and the ability to modify the product to meet consumer demand or to match changes in technology which may offer a better, cheaper alternative technology solution to those able to change with the times.

Controller: The controller is the engine which drives the LED Sign forward. There’s a reason auto manufacturers spend so much money and time on their engines, the engine makes a huge difference. While standard components are somewhat important (i.e. what type of power and connection cables are selected) the controller NEEDS to be something specified and engineered by the manufacturer. The controller is the heart of their Display and it’s important that heart get the maximum number of beats and performs optimally for the lifetime of your system. Make sure the manufacturer you’re dealing with can go over their controller and explain how they engineered a solution specifically for their systems. You can’t go online and find a great solution for LED signage. The solution has to be specifically engineered to the use and controllers (more than anything) need to be product-specific.

Control boards (logic board, receiver cards, etc.) and Control Chips: While this is digging deeper than most people prefer to go, it’s important (again) to make sure the company has sourced the product properly. A year ago, Thailand had some major floods and over 80% of the world’s market were getting hard drives from Thailand. When the source “dried up” from the flood, hard drive levels were at an all time global low and prices were driven up. Several companies ate the loss and others had to increase cost on their systems (causing dealers to lose a lot of sales)/ Without solid sourcing (including a backup source in a different country/location) it’s too easy for a localized event to suddenly cause issues with the ability for a manufacturer to meet market demand. When the 6-8 weeks you were expecting for production on an LED Sign turns into 12+ weeks, nobody will be happy. Proper sourcing avoids these kind of pitfalls.

Software: Is this a component? Most definitely! All too often I see the standard Chinese software on systems “made in the USA.” What the end-user gets is a sub-standard control system, software which is not simple and straightforward to use, and software which DOES NOT meet the market requirements. EVERY LED Signage manufacturer should have a unique solution for their clients. When an end-user comes back to the manufacturer with a special request (i.e. someone who’s display needs to be tied into a scoring system for a sports arena), you’ll find how important it is to have this component sourced through the manufacturer. A request to a “standardized” control system manufacturer in Asia will either never be answered or get the, “We will see” response. LED Sign Manufacturers need to be able to respond to market demand and customer requests and this means software which they can modify as needed.

Don’t accept a mediocre solution at a low price. Fight for the best combination of quality and price possible and always dig deeper. Make sure the system you’re getting is the best possible and unique to the manufacturer of your choice. You don’t always get what you pay for. Make sure what you’re getting is what you expect and the manufacturer can meet your needs.

LED Manufacturer "Value Line" Options vs High Quality Standard


There are many approaches that LED sign manufacturers take when offering product. Some companies have different levels of quality and associated price for their product, others offer fewer options focusing on providing their best product to everyone. I would like to offer my insight into these different approaches. 

The "Value Line"

There will always be a market for low-end products with a rock bottom price. Manufacturers who offer these “value line” products are trying to expand market share and exposure. These types of LED signs typically use less sophisticated hardware (usually an embedded ARM controller) and tend to be built using lower quality components sourced from inexpensive overseas suppliers.

They usually come with a shorter warranty period (typically 1-2 years), and less long term support and parts availability. The software can be different from the manufacturer’s standard package and sometimes developed by the overseas supplier directly.

Of course the big benefit for the value line product is the affordability. Many organizations who would normally not be able to get an LED sign, now have the option to do so. Unfortunately the low price also comes with a higher risk of spending extra time and money on service calls and poorly designed hardware and software. The performance of these signs can often leave customers disappointed that the actual product doesn’t look as good as the manufacturer’s brochure. Over time, the market share gained by the manufacturer turns into a host of unhappy customers and no positive referrals.  

The High Quality Standard Approach

The other approach is to offer only the best product to everyone by providing a high quality product for a fair price. Balancing price and quality into a standard product can be a difficult thing to do for any manufacturer, but some do it very well. In this industry you get what you pay for, as long as you do your research first.This is important to remember because some suppliers will charge a high price for a perceived high quality product, but delivering a standard or value line product instead.

Higher quality signs use better components. This includes using a more powerful controller like an IPC (industrial PC) and internal video components that provide a higher refresh rate, frame rate, and pixel resolution. The LED driver components are better and have a longer lifetime. These are usually sourced from local or high end overseas suppliers.

The warranty should be at least 5 years on a standard product, and some manufacturers offer labor warranties as well. In this economy, a good warranty should be underwritten by a third party to make sure the warranty and parts are always available regardless of the manufacturers status.

Personally, I like the High Quality Standard approach. If you do something well, focus on it and do it well. The lure of expanding profits and market share have distracted many manufacturers, causing the product quality (and often profits) to suffer in the long run. This is bad for the customer and the industry in general. As I noted earlier, the key is to supply a quality product for a fair price. Do your research, and make sure you really get what you pay for.

An LED sign is a big investment and it should reflect the quality and pride of everyone involved, from the component suppliers to the manufacturer to the dealer and finally to the local business or organization using the sign every day.
